The Rise of Sexual Harassment Scandals and the Fall of the Rich, Powerful and Famous

Earlier this month, the entertainment industry erupted when the New York Times published the disturbing report concerning Hollywood mogul, Harvey Weinstein’s eras of exploiting and sexually harassing women.  Some of the biggest and well-respected female actors in Hollywood have now come forward, bravely sharing their stories in an attempt to seek justice and combat the sexual harassment that has been plaguing women for centuries.

Sexual HarassmentFortunately, times are changing and these courageous women are leading the cause for change.  Their voices are being heard and heard loudly.  Just within the past year, everyone from the music & media industries to Silicon Valley and the President of the United States has been inundated with allegations of sexual misconduct.  Twenty-First Century Fox spent close to $50 million on sexual harassment and discrimination lawsuits related to mass claims of misconduct against Roger Ailes, Bill O’Reilly, Jamie Horowitz, Charles Payne and Eric Bolling.  Uber’s sexism scandal led to the resignation of its chief executive and is set to be documented in a Hollywood film by an Oscar nominated writer. R. Kelly is at the center of claims that he has been controlling and abusing women in a sex-obsessed cult.  Usher and Jim Carey are in the midst of severely troubling STD lawsuits.  And, no one can forget the Bill Cosby sexual misconduct scandal. Simply stated, no amount of fame, money or power can protect sexual offenders any more.

In a bid to end sexual harassment and discrimination, women need to continue to come forward and be empowered to do so. Penalties need to be imposed on those responsible as well as complicit in these wrongdoings. Businesses must also do their part, ensuring that employees have every opportunity to report incidents of sexual harassment and ensure that prompt corrective action has been taken when complaints are made.

If you are a victim of sexual harassment or discrimination, you can assert your rights, seek justice, hold the accuser accountable, and demand change. To support your claims, be sure to save all your evidence of the wrongdoing, including emails, voicemails, text messages, and photographs.  Document all instances of inappropriate conduct by your harasser, including the specifics of the date, time, and location in which they occurred. If you have been physically or sexually assaulted or battered, you should report the incident to police immediately and seek medical attention.
